A convenient method for the preparation of α-vinylfurans by phosphine-initiated reactions of various substituted enynes bearing a carbonyl group with aldehydes

α-Vinylfurans were obtained by phosphine-initiated cyclization of various enynes bearing a carbonyl group at the ene end in the presence of various aldehydes, in moderate to high yields. The reaction may consist of 1,6-addition of phosphine to the enynes, ring closure, and Wittig reaction between the ylid resulting from cyclization and an aldehyde. Thus, various aldehydes were able to be used in the reaction. The reaction was influenced greatly by the substituents at the acetylene position (R¹) and the α-position of the carbonyl group (R³).     

Electrical properties and memory effect in the field effect transistor based on organic ferroelectric insulator and pentacene

We have fabricated a field effect transistor (FET) based on an organic ferroelectric insulator and molecular conductor, and investigated the electrical properties and memory effects on the PEN-FET. We have observed a drastic change in the drain current at around the coercive electric fieldE _c of the organic ferroelectric insulator in not only a FET (PEN-FET) based on a pentacene (PEN) film but also a FET (IPEN-FET) based on an iodine doped PEN film. The magnitude of the change of the drain current for the IPEN-FET is 200 times larger than that for the PEN-FET. It is expected from these results that the PEN-FET (especially the IPEN-FET) is an improvement in such devices, since it operates at a low gate electric field accompanied by the appearance of the spontaneous polarization in the organic ferroelectric insulator. In addition, we have found that the drain current for the PEN-FET does not return to the initial drain current ofE _G =0 V/cm for more than one week, even if the gate electric field is changed to 0 V/cm from 500 V/cm(>E _c ). From these results, it is suggested that the PEN-FET becomes a memory device.     

A SAXS study of the nanometer scale hybrid structure of Si---Ti---C---O amorphous fibers

A small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) study was performed to reveal the nanometer scale hybrid structure of Si---Ti---C---O fibers prepared by the pyrolysis of polytitanocarbosilane. The SAXS profile for Si---Ti---C---O fibers is attributed to two different types of scattering entities: an anisotropic contribution from long filaments with diameters hundreds to thousands of Ångströms and an isotropic contribution from β-SiC fine clusters of about a nanometer in diameter. A drastic degradation in the tensile strength of the fibers is correlated to the characteristic variations in their long-and medium-range structure.     

Tensor analyzing power T 20 of the dd → 3Hen and dd → 3Hp reactions at zero angle for energies 140, 200, and 270 MeV

RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility data on the tensor analyzing power T ₂₀ of the dd → ³Hen and dd → ³Hp reactions at zero angle for deuteron kinetic energies of 140, 200, and 270 MeV are reported. The observed positive sign of T ₂₀ clearly demonstrates the sensitivity to the D/S-wave ratio in the ³He and ³H wave functions in the energy range of the experiment. Data on T ₂₀ for the ³Hen channel are in agreement with those for the ³Hp channel within the experimental errors.     

A study of embolizing materials for chemo-embolization therapy of hepatocellular carcinoma: embolic effect of cisplatin albumin microspheres using chitin and chitosan in dogs, and changes of cisplatin content in blood and tissue.

Hepatic artery of dogs was embolized with cisplatin (CDDP) albumin microspheres containing chitin and chitosan to investigate the in vivo CDDP release kinetics from CDDP albumin microspheres, the CDDP cumulative characteristics in the liver, and the influence of microsphere administration on hepatic tissue. Results showed that changes in blood CDDP content were dependent on CDDP albumin microsphere type and that release kinetics were better sustained when chitin was added to the microspheres or when the microspheres were treated with chitosan. In particular, the administration of CDDP in the chitin-containing CDDP chitosan albumin microspheres showed a blood CDDP content of approximately 0.26 micrograms Pt/ml 14 d after administration. The administration of chitin-containing or chitosan treated CDDP microspheres showed a CDDP content in the hepatic tissue of 0.14 to 0.23 micrograms Pt/g 28 d after administration. They also showed better control of CDDP release than those without chitin or chitosan treatment. No CDDP influence on hepatic tissue was observed. We conclude that, even in vivo, chitin and chitosan are effective embolic materials.     

NMR studies on the stereospecific polymerization of methyl vinyl ether. Part I. Polymerization by metal halides: Penultimate effect

Methyl vinyl ether (MVE) was polymerized under various conditions by BF₃·O(C₂H₅)₂ and SnCl₄·CCl₃CO₂H catalysts. The effect of polymerization conditions on the steric structure of poly(methyl vinyl ether) (PMVE) was studied by NMR spectra. It was found that the triad isotacticity of PMVE decreased and the syndiotacticity and heterotacticity increased with increasing polarity of the solvent and increasing polymerization temperature. This result coincided with the qualitative conclusion estimated from softening point and infrared spectra. However, the variation of tacticity by the change of the polarity of a solvent was not so large as expected. There was no large difference between the behavior of BF₃·O(C₂H₅)₂ and SnCl₄·CCl₃CO₂H as catalysts. From the relation between the difference of free energy of monomer addition due to the steric structure of the polymer and the polymerization temperature, it was concluded that the penultimate effect really existed and was due to only the difference in enthalpy in the MVE–BF₃. O(C₂H₅)₂ or MVE–SnCl₄·CCl₃CO₂H systems. The penultimate effect was not greatly changed by the polymerization conditions in these systems.     

A new class of C1-symmetric monosulfoximine ligands for enantioselective hetero Diels-Alder reactions

Quinoline-based C1-symmetric sulfoximines have been used as chiral ligands in copper-catalyzed asymmetric hetero Diels-Alder reactions leading to cycloadducts with up to 96% ee.
